How to be a Good Leader: 2 Things to Do Today That Will Change Everything

Walking into the coaching session, I remember feeling a little apprehensive about how the conversation would go. The co-founders I was working with had a tough go of it. Both were deeply hurt by the other. Their hurt had a lot of time to fester, eventually growing into resentment and contempt for the other. A foundational lack of trust characterized the relationship and there was a long list of reasons on both sides as to what led them there. The bottom line was, there was no quick fix here.

What I shared with them, I’ll share with you today … If we want to move forward, and if we want to be a good leader of ourselves and others, you and I must have a willingness to choose two things:

  1. We can choose to become mature.

  2. And to become mature, we must be willing to grow.

It’s just as simple and frankly, as hard as that. After all, who said the process was easy?

When I think back on all of the leaders I’ve worked with over the years, one key to becoming someone who grows into maturity is having a willingness to practice self-examination on an ongoing basis. Here are a series of questions I like to ask myself as I practice the power of self-examination (you’re also welcome to read more here):

  • What happened this week?

  • How did I react/respond?

  • Why did I react/respond that way?

  • Is there anything I could have done differently? (as I related to myself or to another)

  • What steps can I take now to move forward?

I truly believe if we’re willing to choose those two things, each one of us can become good leaders, even great ones. The process requires practice though. If you need guidance to take steps forward, our team is here to offer practical help. You can schedule a time to connect with us here.
